You Are Invited...

My painting professor (and one of the three most influential men in my life) organizes an art exhibition every year for his pupils to have the opportunity to showcase their work in a gallery. It is called "Painting in the Gardens" based on the theme of the Summer class where the artwork is produced. I was chosen to design the invitation and I'm very proud of the design!

I used one of my paintings for the background, applied several effects to it and then used a vector baroque motif to finish the composition. The typography is simple and elegant and the colors I believe fit the mood of the event.

I want to thank my husband for always giving me constructive criticism and helping me achieve this look.

If you are in the area don't hesitate to pass by. The opening night is always great!

Take Back the Night

Relationship violence and sexual assault are huge problems in our society (Please note both women and men are victims of these crimes). Besides painting, graphic design, and animals, bringing awareness to these issues is one of my passions in life.

I was asked by the Women's Center at Florida International University to design the flyer for their upcoming event "Take Back the Night." A movement that started in Brussels, Belgium and has spread all over the world, especially college campuses. Both women and men walk to "reclaim the night" when some of these horrific crimes occur. To learn more about it visit the official website here.

I am really pleased with the typography on this one. I also designed the one for last year's but back then they were going for a more "diverse," gender-inclusive idea.

What do you think?

FIU Bookplate

I am proud to announce that I was chosen to design Florida International University's official Library bookplate!

What is a bookplate? You may ask... (I know I did!)
Not so common these days, a bookplate functions as the "name tag" for a book. Back in the time when owning books was a sign of wealth and social standing, the bookplate gave you the information about the owner and its collection. They were usually placed on the inside of the front part of the cover. Some of them were very simple, some of them were very elaborate.

For this commission I received instructions that they wanted something that would represent South Florida and the University itself. I decided to go with the fauna of the Everglades, especially since the Golden Panther is the school's mascot. I also included the alligator, the gator gar (fish), a blue heron and a roseate spoonbill (a beautiful bird which gets its name for its pink feathers and spoon-shaped beak). They wanted me to leave a space in the middle where they will put the name of the person to whom the book will be dedicated to (they are using this as a fund-raising tool).

I highly recommend that you visit the Everglades and do some nature watching if you are in the South Florida area. My favorite spot is Shark Valley, where you can ride your bicycle on a 15 mile circuit while being surrounded by one of America's most precious ecosystems. And pleeeease don't miss riding on an air-boat! It is awesome!!!
