Cute Stuff

 

Besides all the serious design stuff I absolutely love drawing/illustrating cutesy stuff. I love hot pink, bows, ribbon, glitter and other girly things. So here are a couple of things that have been occupying my hands and my thoughts lately. I love birdies, so chickadees proved to be a source of inspiration for several designs, and let's not forget "the puppy-faced bunny" just in time for easter!

Vectorized Portrait

I love doing portraits, I don't care if they are in oil, pastel or digitally drawn. My husband was the model for this one (he is of course, one of my favorite people to look at <3). I was experimenting with color and the simplification of shapes. I think I can still simplify even more, but I didn't want it to be to abstract. Which color do you like the best? I'm particularly drawn to the yellow one, that specific hue reminds me of mangoes (kind of weird right?).

After much resisting due to time constraints and whatnot, I decided to open my very own Instagram account. Here is Quesito expressing my current situation and inviting you to follow me via the popular app.

New Piggy Illustrations and Games

After reviewing my Etsy statistics, I realized that the item with the most hits was my "Pin the Tail on the Piggy" game. I decided this chubby character needed to make a couple more appearances, so I designed a couple more things featuring him including a "Pin the Heart on the Piggy's Belly" (top) and an illustrated rendition of the saying "When Pigs Fly."

I need to come up with a cute, yet clever name for this illustrated mammal. Some of the things that have occurred to me are Don Cerdito, Don Marranito,  and Mr. Marranito. Do you have any ideas?

Quesito

I have decided to give more of a personality to this little guy... His name is Quesito (little cheese in Spanish). He is a hopeless romantic and a food lover (any similarities to her creator are purely coincidental). He has an alter ego which you will meet soon...

The other day I sketched a mouse (shown on top) on my phone with the stylus my friend Vanessa got me for my birthday. I loved the shapes and the simplicity of it, so I re-drew it and developed it further in Adobe Illustrator. I thought it was an appropriate time, since Sunday I painted a cat and posted it in my other blog.
How cute is he?!?

Cousin's Graduation

I decided to share this small creation because it involves one of my favorite subjects: dogs.
My cousin graduated with her psychology degree last February and I decided to design something quick and original for her card. I chose her four-legged "son" Tony. He is a Cocker Spaniel which we rescued from the shelter a couple of months ago. He is the sweetest dog EVER!!!!
Please adopt!!! There are many doggies in need of a good, loving home.

The Classics

If you follow my painting blog, you are probably aware that I'm currently working on the Greek mythology muses. I was browsing the internet the other day and I found Jane Pack, an artist who as a personal project, is trying to illustrate the Iliad. I thought it was really neat, since I am currently reading the book. Moreover, it is always comforting to know there are other people who are still interested in the classics. Any other book lovers out there?

Sushi on Stilts

Having looked at the blog I shared during my last post (Daily Sushi), I was inspired to create my own little sushi illustration. I pictured the piece of sushi trying to escape its future predator. The filling looked liked a screaming mouth to me, the chopsticks worked as stilts, and I could not leave out the wasabi, which turned out to be its hair/hat/wig.

I found the most adorable tumblr blog while browsing the internet the other day...
It is called "Daily Sushi" and it was created by Argentinian blogger, web developer and illustrator: Joel Betancourt. His idea is to feature a sushi-related illustration every day, so it is wonderful place to find inspiration and to discover fellow artists working on both digital and natural media.
Your visit to this site will be highly appetizing, even if your palette does not really care for this Japanese delicacy.

Caturday on a Monday

Ever since the time of the pharaohs in Egypt, cats have been venerated and loved by the human race (probably even before).  Although I have never been the owner of one myself, I do think they are fascinating creatures and I see them popping up in every other "meme" on facebook. So I thought, why not draw a cat?
I don't know if you have noticed, but I like round, chubby, cute figures (said figures probably remind me of myself... except for the cute part --I have been known to be the opposite of cute many-a-time--). Furthermore, this is my chubby gray interpretation of the household feline. From this cute little fellow, a whole new illustration came about. But I will show it to you on my next post...

The Chicken Family

As a designer you always have "blah" moments in which you really don't want to focus on major work. As a regular person you have a few minutes here and there to use at your leisure (If they don't happen very often they become precious).

Today's post is the result of combining these two types of moments and turning them into something productive. I was sitting at the computer at the end of a work day and found myself with a couple minutes before my husband picked me up. I didn't have enough time to focus on a lengthy task, but I did have time to sketch in illustrator, so I did.

I started drawing shapes mindlessly until I drew an eye, and from there the rooster cartoon "manifested." After I was done with it, I developed the hen and the chickens. I forced myself to experiment with painting outside the lines, which is not my usual style, and ended up loving the outcome.

Later that day, I added a background and a little love message and gave it to my hubby as a little token of appreciation during our first anniversary.

Oh! The joy of no-pressure sketching!!! Take advantage of it!!!

Date Night

Just in time for my first wedding anniversary, I wanted to share this quick illustration inspired by the nickname I have for my husband: pollito (little chicken in Spanish). I stylized the little birds because I only wanted to use simple shapes and I imagined them going out on a romantic date. The bow tie was required for the occasion ( I really put it there because the day of my wedding was the only time I have seen my husband/boyfriend of 11 years wear one).
I really like the sky in this one...

Bird and Ribbon Illustration

 This is an image from my "digital sketchbook." I wanted to draw a bird and use the colors of the Quetzal (even though it is not supposed to be one). I also wanted the bird to hold a ribbon which then became the initial of my name.
I created it in Adobe Illustrator, my all-time favorite software!!! For all of you starting as graphic designers or creative professionals, that is definitely a must-have!!!
